"DO YOU HAVE THE LOVE OF CHRIST IN YOUR HEART?"
by Paul D. Fisher
"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another;
as I have loved
you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all
men know that ye are my
disciples, if ye have love one to another" (John 13:34-35).
Jesus commanded His followers to have love for one another
as He loved them and
that by this love could those outside of Christ know
Christians. This love that could
be seen and felt was and is a sign of the true believers
in Jesus. But it is one thing
to say that we have love like Jesus and quite another
to show that we have this
love. Maybe looking at examples of Jesus' love will help
us to know how we are to
love one another.
Jesus said, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with ali
thy heart, and with allthy soul,
and with all thy mind" (Matt. 22:37). Jesus demonstrated
this type of love in coming
to this earth in the fashion of a man and following the
Father's will even to the
point of and including death. In the garden the night
that Jesus was betrayed He
prayed three times that this cup of suffering be taken
away fi.om Him, but the
Father's will was always what He wanted to do. This,
of course, was the most
Supreme act of love ever shown to man!
Jesus' love for man was also shown in the fact that He
would go without food or
rest in order to teach, preach and help the people around
Him. Upon seeing the
people coming to Him the scriptures teach that He had
compassion on them (Mt
9:36). He knew that He had what they needed and compassion
is another way we
can show love.
When we look at the life of Jesus Christ we see many examples
of His love poured
out on all kinds of people, rich and poor, sick and lame,
old and young. Jesus loved
them and He is our example in love and all good things.
Jesus' command about love
needs to be in our hearts, lives and especially in our
actions toward one another and everyone with whom we come in contact. Can
the people around you see that you
are a Christian because of the love that radiates from
you? If not, we need to study.
