Champions For God!

Champion: "1 a militant advocate or defender; 2. one that wins first prize or place in a contest; 3. one that is acknowledged to be better than all others." (The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, p128).

In the Bible we have many examples of God's idea of what a champion is. This week, in Vacation Bible School, we are going to be studying five such champions.

Gideon was called to be a deliverer of God's people from Midianite oppression. At first he had his doubts, not in God or His power, but in himself Gideon stands today as an example that God can use any one of us if we are willing.

Nehemiah, a cupbearer for King Artexerxes, became a champion builder for God because he was willing to be used by God. His story is one of great courage and faith in God in spite of many enemies.

Esther stands as one of God's greatest heroines of all the Bible. Her story is one of personal danger, political intrigue, loyalty to God and man, victory over extreme adversity, and the reality of God's providence.

Peter, fisherman, disciple, apostle of Jesus, the one who denied even knowing Jesus the night He was betrayed, is a champion of Christian growth. Peter shows us that faith is not a fixed location, but it is something that is sometimes very strong and then sometimes very weak and as long as we are in this world, our faith in God and Jesus Christ must continue to grow.

Paul, from chief persecutor to faithful preacher, we see the effect that the gospel can have on a life. Saul of Tarsus becomes a champion of evangelism for God right before our very eyes in the book of Acts.
