Jeremiah
by Paul D. Fisher--June 10, 2001

Jeremiah prophesied during one of the worst periods of Jewish history. His life spanned the mle of five kings, from good King Josiah to one of the worst of all Jewish history, Zedekiah. Jeremiah was never a popular person because of his prophesies. Many times even his very life was in danger. He understood the words that the apostle Paul would pen centuries later, "Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?" (Galatians 4:16). Many times the truth that God told Jeremiah to speak caused the people of Jerusalem to treat him like he was their enemy. He cried out to the people to repent of their sins and return to God and they like many today did not want to listen. He told them of the captivity they would be forced to endure after many died at the hands of the Babylonians. The people did not want to hear that kind of sermon, they wanted kind words and make-us-feel-good type sermons. Jeremiah did not like to have to preach those kinds of sermons, but he preached all the words that God told him to preach. God's word was like a fire itl his breast and when Jeremiah thought he just would keep it to himself, he found that he could not keep quiet, he had to speak God's word. May we take the same course of action as Jeremiah and may God's word be tike a fire in our breast and if we do not speak His word may the fire burn within our bones!
